Many Nigerians are complaining about the constant fall in the value of the naira and they blame the government. But is the government really to blame? In truth, our insatiable appetite for all things foreign is to blame. No nation can become great if it is clothed, serviced and fed by other nations. It just will not happen. In lay man’s terms, a nation’s currency is like a promise by the issuing authority, in this case the Nigerian Government, to pay holders of the currency. In other words, currency is an assurance by a government on goods and services.
What happens when we spend our naira buying imported items and not made-in-Nigeria products is that our government is assuring the nation’s from which those imports come from and not our own nation. So imagine this scenario, imagine that Nigeria and other nations are football teams. How can we win if our supporters club keeps patronising other teams and not our own football team?
This is the self-inflicted injury we have inflicted on our dear naira and instead of blaming ourselves we are blaming government. I always fly Arik business class whenever I am travelling abroad except Arik does not fly on that route. Not only is an Arik ticket a fraction of the cost of a British Airways ticket, but the money I pay to Arik circulates in Nigeria and helps firm up the naira’s value. As I speak to you today, a British Airways business class to London is N2,103,666 while Arik business class is N551,545, yet our elite still fly BA.
But though Arik offers an affordable alternative to British Airways and other foreign airlines, our big men prefer to pay double what Arik charges to BA and other foreign airlines for the same services and yet they complain about the value of the naira. Arik’s planes are brand new and are more comfortable than British Airways. I know that for a fact because I have flown both. If we do not fly Arik, who would?
I have Nasco cornflakes and I have eaten Kellogs cornflakes. In terms of nutrition and taste they are almost indistinguishable. Yet our elite who will rather eat Kellogs than Nasco cornflakes, wonder why the naira is falling! Even something like Quaker Oats can be substituted with corn meal known locally as pap. Obasanjo Farms of Nigeria and other large scale poultry farms have the capacity to provide chicken for the entire nation. Since that is the case, why are we even buying imported chicken?
Imported chicken may be cheaper in financial terms but it is more expensive in health terms. These birds are heavily treated with various chemicals to plump them up and preserve them and artificially enhance their taste and by the time they hit our shores they are not as safe to consume as our domestic chicken. In fact, what is wrong if every family in Nigeria has a poultry in their backyard to give them eggs and meat? It is feasible. It is not beneath us.
My steward went to Makoko, which is one of the largest fishing communities in Lagos. He wanted to buy fish and they were selling imported frozen fish!
Yet in the very waters in front of them, there exist fresh fish that is more nutritious than the cheap frozen fish they were selling. We keep spending over N1 billion importing rice when our own farmers are capable of meeting our national demand for rice. But for some reason, Nigerians just prefer to buy imported rice. The imported rice we buy in Nigeria is not as good as our local rice because it has been stored for years in silos and treated with chemicals.
Moreover, every time you buy it, your money is going out of Nigeria to service an economy in Asia. The end result is that their currency gains value while ours loses value. Have you ever wondered why European Premiership clubs are so interested in Nigeria? It is because Nigerians spend billions travelling to Europe to watch their games, buy their merchandise and promote their leagues. Yet, back at home, we would not be caught dead watching our own local league.
If we will not spend money on made-in-Nigeria goods and services, how can we expect our naira to hold its value and appreciate?
Obviously we cannot cut ourselves off from the world. No nation is an island, but at least we can fly Nigerian airlines, eat locally produced food and patronise our football league. If we do this, not only will our economy grow and produce jobs for Nigerians, it will also make our goods and services improve in value such that they will be attractive enough to be imported.
We may approach the United Kingdom for loans to fund the 2016 budget. The funniest thing is that the British Prime Minister, David
Cameron, is famous for using the London Underground public transport facilities. What is wrong if our ministers use public transportation once in a while? What is wrong if they enter a taxi to work? And even if we must buy cars for government officials why must we buy foreign cars?
Silverbird bought Innoson vehicles as official cars for our staff. The buses are roomy, very comfortable and extremely durable. I have never lived to regret these purchases for even a day. But most of all, I know that my purchase helps to keep jobs in Nigeria and improve the value of the naira. I urge you to do the same. We have no other country but Nigeria and it is you and I that will make it what it is.
Can you imagine how far Innoson would go if we spent the N30 billion we use in buying cars for our elected and appointed officials at the federal, state and local government levels on Innoson vehicles? We must make hard choices if we want Nigeria to be better and spending borrowed money on convoys for elected officials is not a priority. It is a luxury that Nigeria cannot afford at this time in her history. If we buy Naija We Will Grow the Naira.
Finally, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at the level of support the hashtag, #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira has gotten since I originated it on Twitter. Within three days, the hashtag had featured on the BBC and on CNN.
Let me thank the ordinary Nigerians who joined me in making the hashtag take off. If you are manufacturer or provider of made-in-
Nigeria goods and services, tweet them at me using the hashtag #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira and I will help you promote your product. I also want to thank Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, the founder and Chief Executive of Innoson Motors for personally coming to Abuja to deliver my personal Innoson car which I now drive about in Abuja. I advised Dr. Chukwuma to make a bullet proof version so our high profile politicians will not have to buy imported bullet proof luxury car and he said to me ‘Distinguished Senator, just give me three months’.
My name is Ben Murray-Bruce and I just want to say #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira!

God bless you Ben, in fact you are one in a million and I must say I really appreciate this your struggle for this great nation called Nigeria. My take on buy naija to grow naira is that our manufactures should know that Nigerian always goes for cheap products that is why our locally made goods never get attention from Nigerians. Therefore our manufactures should always consider the price if truly they want their goods to be patronised by Nigerian.

This article is a blatant display of mercurial intelligence and unbridled common sense. You sir are one in a handful of government officials who continually encourage me to delay my visa plans and see if Nigeria can ultimately deliver on all the promises it holds.

Thanks Senator for this thought provoking piece. I would however implore you to introduce bills in the Senate of the Federal Republic to restrict some imported goods from entering the country. May not be a popular move poliitibally but it is a risk worth taking for the good of the country.

Nigerian Economy is in trouble
Make no mistake about it, Nigerian economy is in trouble. Its in trouble because we refuse to do our home work. Its in trouble because we borrow money to pay salaries. Its in trouble because we borrow money to live our luxury lifestyle. Its in trouble because we cannot make a single good in Nigeria and patronize it.
Money is different from currency. Money is value. Currency is paper. Education is not going to school, it is using acquired knowledge to solve your own problem, that of your neighbor, and the nation at large.
Let us do something to save this economy and save naira #MadeInNigeria True talk Sir.

God bless you sir, just to buttress your point sir, we Nigerians needs to cultivate the attitude of continuity and maintenance, More so, the Federal Government needs to provide a good enabling environment that will motivate anyone who’s is interested in promoting our locally made product and services, am very sure there are vibrant individual outside there who are willing to go extra miles in making sure that we have a good and authentic locally made goods. Thanks for the write-up sir. God Bless The Republic Of Nigeria. i just wanna say #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira!

Dear Sir, am so glad to read this article.
I consider it the missing link in the naira value decline and the general clamour for devaluation and non devaluation of the naira. However, we need more orientation at all levels in Nigeria to effectively drive home the analysis in your write up. By all levels, I mean the rich and the poor, radio jingles, schools, market places, corporate bodies etc . We all need to be aware of what naira devaluation or non devaluation is all about, it’s implications for personal life, business and the economy, and ultimately whose interest it truly serves, if implemented. Thank you.

The greatest thing that could happen to Nigeria is to elect this man, Ben Bruce, president of Nigeria. He is the only living Nigerian who thinks about the future and wellbeing of this nation. Nigerian “leaders” are there for their selfish ends. If Ben Bruce is given a chance to put into practice, what he preaches, Nigeria will become a country to be recorned with in and outside of Nigeria.

I work in a construction company and presently we are on a project that I cannot place value to in terms of money involved. Folks, what I can say is that the project is a multi-billion, very sincerely I don’t know if I should use Euro, Pounds, Dollar. I know for sure that the Naira value will be so confusing.
It will surprise you that all materials except cement, manpower and few other things were not imported. I keep saying to myself, why is masking tape, chisel, hammer, hand trowel, tiles, cables, and so many other product and services has to be imported.
Companies in Nigeria producing these goods and services will never be out of business, food will be on the tables of more families in Nigeria, our Naira will be more strengthened, and improve the standard of living.
Nigerians, we just must arise at this point in term to wake up to reality that for Nigeria to survive, it require everyone of us to make it work.
Over the weekend, I was in a conference where we watch how Lee Yew of Singapore redefine the identity of his nation. Now is the time for us to do the same.
I have make a decision to be the Lee Yew of Nigeria where other nations come for everything they need.
Good work Senator Ben Bruce.

The reason why in a family you have a father, mother etc is for order in the home. If there is no order the responsibility falls on someone to ensure there is order. Children will always be children, their desires will always be varied and if not curtailed by the parent, it could lead to destroying a family. You cannot remove the government from the problem of the currency. Why it makes sense to say Nigerians are responsible for the problem with the currency fall because of their consumption patterns but where is the government in all of these.
The government is the one with responsibility to bring order! The government has the means to impose strict policies that restricts what Nigerians can and cannot do just like a father can impose strict sanctions on his children especially if they have been bad. Why can’t th government close down our borders like they did in Singapore? Insist that no foreign products will come into Nigeria. As long as there are options people will always go for it. Some countries even restricted number of children a household can have because they want to control their population. This is just to tell you the extent a government can go.
In my own views the problem this country is facing is the fault of the failure of the government who has all the powers and tools to set limits but have failed to do so. Over the years even when the government set restrictions, they are not enforced or people look for ways to go round it at the end nothing is done or they sort people out and go free. This is common sense.

well, thank you for your common sense Sir. As a matter of fact: one of the places to start the lean spending is the allowances of the legislators (senators, etc). their salaries and allowances should be reviewed downward. in fact, I recommend that the FG set up a unit or department in the CBN that will be in charge of executing projects in the various constituencies rather than putting the monies in the hands of the senators. why? because these senators seldom execute projects with the monies, rather, they divert the monies into their pockets. occasionally, they come to their constituencies with cash and distribute same to the impoverished people who runs helter-skelter to get their share. let’s start from there dear Sen. Bruce. in the light of your common sense, I hope you will not oppose President Buhari’s stance on reducing the allowances/salaries of the the legislators.

Who is Genuine in Nigeria?
Senator Ben Murray Bruce turned 60 yesterday, he took the opportunity to launch his book “The Common Sense Revolution” but it’s sad to see that the event in its totality portrays the average Nigerian Politician.
Usually, I hate to attend these so called “Big” events but it was Ben Bruce, the common sense guy, I jumped at the Opportunity to go with my department, department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos as we were invited with a letter and we were feeling all important. We didn’t know it was an invitation to humiliation.
At the venue, we were told to go upstairs, we didn’t mind, as they said that area was reserved for students. Getting there, I realized it was a perfect view to watch the “Elites” wine and dine. Still, we didn’t care. We only began to care when the ceremony kept going on and all tables kept getting additional contents and we were just there, like Observers. Don’t forget that we were invited, as I said earlier.
While all of that kept happening, I still didn’t care because they said every guest will get a free copy of the book. I wanted the book so, I waited on. At the end, only the guests got the Book. I had to look at our invitation to be sure we were guests. Yes, we were guests but the stiff class stratification that Senator Bruce Criticizes came to play.
It’s so sad to see that the actions of the Common Sense Guy justifies the “Common Sense is not so common” statement.
Since I know it’s all fake, I’d like to give a professional PR advice. It’s so bad, if you invite Nigerian Students, who will, to a large extent, determine your political success, to an event only for them to watch you and your rich friends dine. Their votes aren’t even enough.
Writing a book about Common Sense doesn’t actually make you have Common Sense. We aren’t hungry people. We are Unilag Students and we are contented with what we have, we wouldn’t go to shop 10 to sweet-talk anyone about common sense, just to get rice.
Happy Birthday, Senator Ben! Thanks for the deceit, segregation and above all, thanks so much for the Palm oil made Jollof Rice with a meat-like object.
I am Abidemi Adesokan, A concerned Nigerian Student who believes there is hope for Nigeria, but Bruce isn’t just that guy.

Dear Senator Ben Murray-Bruce,
I applaud your drive to sensitize the Nigerian public towards what their duties to improve the economic situation of the country. However, my comment is a bit different from all that has been said here.
I want to believe you are a patriotic Nigerian that transcends being a politician and the development of the country is very important to you as you have been telling us. To be honest and blunt, I am putting this to you as a test of your character, personality and integrity. So, I want to implore you to go a step further by enlightening the public as regards their duties to non-performing elected public office holders. I believe a lot of the general public do not know that they have the right to recall a non-performing elected public office holder or if they do, they do not know how to go about it. This will curb a lot of politicians who believe that once elected, they have free rein to do as they like without recourse to those that elected them. I know your fellow politicians may put pressure on you and may ostracise you. However, you may also decide to put your name on the same pedestal as the likes of the founding fathers of this country. It is true that you have nothing to prove to any individual but if you truly want to help to bring sanity into our legislative arm of government, this is one way of doing it. I look forward to you dis-proving the assumption that all politicians do have ulterior motive when embarking on a programme that seem to benefit the general populace than themselves.
Thank you, sir.
