Buy Naija To Grow The Naira

Many Nigerians are complaining about the constant fall in the value of the naira and they blame the government. But is the government really to blame? In truth, our insatiable appetite for all things foreign is to blame. No nation can become great if it is clothed, serviced and fed by other nations. It just will not happen. In lay man’s terms, a nation’s currency is like a promise by the issuing authority, in this case the Nigerian Government, to pay holders of the currency. In other words, currency is an assurance by a government on goods and services.

What happens when we spend our naira buying imported items and not made-in-Nigeria products is that our government is assuring the nation’s from which those imports come from and not our own nation. So imagine this scenario, imagine that Nigeria and other nations are football teams. How can we win if our supporters club keeps patronising other teams and not our own football team?

This is the self-inflicted injury we have inflicted on our dear naira and instead of blaming ourselves we are blaming government. I always fly Arik business class whenever I am travelling abroad except Arik does not fly on that route. Not only is an Arik ticket a fraction of the cost of a British Airways ticket, but the money I pay to Arik circulates in Nigeria and helps firm up the naira’s value. As I speak to you today, a British Airways business class to London is N2,103,666 while Arik business class is N551,545, yet our elite still fly BA.

But though Arik offers an affordable alternative to British Airways and other foreign airlines, our big men prefer to pay double what Arik charges to BA and other foreign airlines for the same services and yet they complain about the value of the naira. Arik’s planes are brand new and are more comfortable than British Airways. I know that for a fact because I have flown both. If we do not fly Arik, who would?

I have Nasco cornflakes and I have eaten Kellogs cornflakes. In terms of nutrition and taste they are almost indistinguishable. Yet our elite who will rather eat Kellogs than Nasco cornflakes, wonder why the naira is falling! Even something like Quaker Oats can be substituted with corn meal known locally as pap. Obasanjo Farms of Nigeria and other large scale poultry farms have the capacity to provide chicken for the entire nation. Since that is the case, why are we even buying imported chicken?

Imported chicken may be cheaper in financial terms but it is more expensive in health terms. These birds are heavily treated with various chemicals to plump them up and preserve them and artificially enhance their taste and by the time they hit our shores they are not as safe to consume as our domestic chicken. In fact, what is wrong if every family in Nigeria has a poultry in their backyard to give them eggs and meat? It is feasible. It is not beneath us.

My steward went to Makoko, which is one of the largest fishing communities in Lagos. He wanted to buy fish and they were selling imported frozen fish!
Yet in the very waters in front of them, there exist fresh fish that is more nutritious than the cheap frozen fish they were selling. We keep spending over N1 billion importing rice when our own farmers are capable of meeting our national demand for rice. But for some reason, Nigerians just prefer to buy imported rice. The imported rice we buy in Nigeria is not as good as our local rice because it has been stored for years in silos and treated with chemicals.

Moreover, every time you buy it, your money is going out of Nigeria to service an economy in Asia. The end result is that their currency gains value while ours loses value. Have you ever wondered why European Premiership clubs are so interested in Nigeria? It is because Nigerians spend billions travelling to Europe to watch their games, buy their merchandise and promote their leagues. Yet, back at home, we would not be caught dead watching our own local league.

If we will not spend money on made-in-Nigeria goods and services, how can we expect our naira to hold its value and appreciate?

Obviously we cannot cut ourselves off from the world. No nation is an island, but at least we can fly Nigerian airlines, eat locally produced food and patronise our football league. If we do this, not only will our economy grow and produce jobs for Nigerians, it will also make our goods and services improve in value such that they will be attractive enough to be imported.
We may approach the United Kingdom for loans to fund the 2016 budget. The funniest thing is that the British Prime Minister, David

Cameron, is famous for using the London Underground public transport facilities. What is wrong if our ministers use public transportation once in a while? What is wrong if they enter a taxi to work? And even if we must buy cars for government officials why must we buy foreign cars?

Silverbird bought Innoson vehicles as official cars for our staff. The buses are roomy, very comfortable and extremely durable. I have never lived to regret these purchases for even a day. But most of all, I know that my purchase helps to keep jobs in Nigeria and improve the value of the naira. I urge you to do the same. We have no other country but Nigeria and it is you and I that will make it what it is.

Can you imagine how far Innoson would go if we spent the N30 billion we use in buying cars for our elected and appointed officials at the federal, state and local government levels on Innoson vehicles? We must make hard choices if we want Nigeria to be better and spending borrowed money on convoys for elected officials is not a priority. It is a luxury that Nigeria cannot afford at this time in her history. If we buy Naija We Will Grow the Naira.

Finally, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at the level of support the hashtag, #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira has gotten since I originated it on Twitter. Within three days, the hashtag had featured on the BBC and on CNN.
Let me thank the ordinary Nigerians who joined me in making the hashtag take off. If you are manufacturer or provider of made-in-

Nigeria goods and services, tweet them at me using the hashtag #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira and I will help you promote your product. I also want to thank Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, the founder and Chief Executive of Innoson Motors for personally coming to Abuja to deliver my personal Innoson car which I now drive about in Abuja. I advised Dr. Chukwuma to make a bullet proof version so our high profile politicians will not have to buy imported bullet proof luxury car and he said to me ‘Distinguished Senator, just give me three months’.

My name is Ben Murray-Bruce and I just want to say #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira!

  8. sir, its normal to make mistakes while striving to build the nation; common sense teaches us this, however, we do not have to keep lamenting because of the book-publishing mistake.lts rather an awakening to the fact that WE ARE WATCHING OURSELVES to ensure that we do the right thing by practising common sense. The implication of this is that your campaign for “#buynaija…” is having a mutiplier effect on the common sense practice; no matter which way you look at it. So let the flow continue, distinguish Senator!

They are worthwhile n we believe shall surely metamorphosed to create the desired change n evidential visible result in no distant time. However, I want to plea with your excellency to woo more like minded senators and house of representatives members to your distinguished forum so as to push forward with vast support people oriented policies like you had always ascribed to and aired out in your television cast and other social media source. With these am sure your conviction for patronising and enhancing made I naija products can come to a reality. I strongly also advise that you push for a policy such that every consumption n utilisation of goods & services in all government institutions are produced/serviced/provided by naija. This would re-engineer our mindset and create a fresh appetite for Naija made goods and services and ultimately would enhance the value of our currency in compares to others as well as geometrically spring up our GDP. Keep up the good work distinguished Senator Ben Murray Bruce, Nigerians are behind your projects and ever ready to support your vision.

Until we have the capability to enforce the law on piracy, I too would publish outside.

  36. Greetings my fellow Nigerians, why is Nigerian problem becoming bigger everyday is that, Any leader who begins to analyse failure instead of planning adjustment to correct the mistakes is mentally backsliding, that is what this present administration is very good at doing. Secondly, our problem is the constitution, for a federal system to work effectively, there must be the supremacy of the constitution, rule of law, bicameral legislature, a very good allocation formula and the most important one the independent of the Judiciary, Nigerian politicians are really taking advantage of the constitution since the Judiciary is not independent every ruling political party will always take advantage of them and our Elections will always end in Tribunals instead of the (inec) Independent National Electoral commission. Thirdly, our Internal institutions like (the house of Assembly ), (EFCC ), Economic and finance crime commission, are not working effectively, how many bills the house of Assembly has passed in the past and present administration to move this country forward, but they receive salaries that can feed half of Nigerians a week. Now the EFCC, the EFCC is a political party also, why a say is a political party is that, they are always working for the ruling party and not independently. Fourthly, sorry to tell you the truth Plato said “the truth is always bitter but you have to say it ” , our Leaders are ignorance about Democracy, most of them don’t know that Democracy has face 1, 2, 3 and 4, and you have to take all those four steps to make a country development, and they don’t even know about the five stages of development , we have to train leaders and stop this multi party system that create selfish leaders, or we go back and practice a confederal system of government. Let me tell you how this confederation will reduce Nigerian problem, when the regional levels (states ) the cartons, has power more than the centre government, when the states pay allocation to the federal government, some of our problems like unemployment, kidnapping, militancy, Boko haram and Biafra agitation. How is this going to reduce our problems, if Rivers state can control their oil and pay just a token to the federal government, there will be more employment in Rivers state and States like kogi states will start the farming that was given over 70 percent Nigerians employment when I was in primary school, and it will create more employment in the Northern part of the country. Nigeria is our country we shall build it and stay in it, we will never run to any other country for good life rather me and you will make it possible. I am Kenneth Israel and i just want to make common sense.

  46. Your excellenncy sir,and distinguished senator.you made salient points that stares us in the face like the way tribal marks do on our southwestern brothers.your analysis shows that the downward trend of national degradation and corruption is reversible.but then,a careful research into the the genesis of this decay shows that corruption favourable policies were forced into law to kickstart this degradation sequence by ‘well meaning’ nigerians in the 80’s and early 90’s.it also needs to be reversed too.
Also, the unusual increase in the taste for foreign goods was fuelled with the help of these’policies’ which were supposedly meant to improve the economy.now, technocrats like you sir,and myself are expected to tidy up the mess which they got the country into-for no reason.
If we decide to tackle the problem using the private sector approach, then series of composite measures should be adopted for use.starting from passing into law-favourable policies for internal development,to stewarding production processes to satisfy local demand optimally, and also to using national media to sensitize the public on economic dangers of the said activity above-like you have been doing sir.these are but a few of the numerous measures that could be adopted to stem the tide of this decay.
In satisfying local demands, apart from putting in place policies that would discourage importation,if production output of locally made goods are chaperoned to the same verifiable standard of imported ones-if not better;that would go a long way in taming our wild lust for foreign goods and channel back home income that can be used to boost our GDP.
So,the solution lies in using a systematic approach.
But Also, the mantra that change is internal should make us reflect on what we as citizens have done so far to help the situation.are we hell-bent on patronizing foreign products, when there is a better alternative locally?
A personal experience made me realise the power of reasoning and how it could help in this situation.I preferentially consume alchohol and was faced with a decision of having to choose between a foreign brand of lager beer and a locally bottled palmwine.even when the advertorial appeal of the foreign brand was lobbying my mind for approval, immediately I tasted the palmwine, that momentary confusion left me.the reason for choosing the palmwine was obvious.
1.It tasted better and didn’t messup internal body temperature as beer would
    2.It was cheaper
3.It blended better in the system even though the weather is hot.
And so ,there are many of our products that could do the jobs foreign ones are doing without stress.
I really hope sir, that one day I will get the chance to work together with you on national interests from an economic perspective to improve the fortunes of our country.may God be with you sir
