Nigeria’s Biggest Problem

Many people talk about the problems militating against Nigeria’s progress and in doing so they list out corruption, a bad economy, terrorism or crime. In my opinion, Nigeria’s biggest problem is not corruption, a bad economy, terrorism or crime. These are just symptoms of the problem we face in Nigeria. Nigeria’s biggest problem is that we are not united. Fix that and you fix Nigeria! Today, instead of solving this problem, we have chosen rather to continue the problem by poisoning our youth with Nigeria’s biggest problem of disunity.
Right before our eyes, our youths are using social media for disunity, fighting each other on basis of party, religion and tribe. For instance, I was appalled when a youth tweeted a picture of another youth who had added him to a Twitter list called ‘political enemies’. Can you believe it? Nigeria’s biggest problem is the reason it was easy so for the colonialists to colonise our ancestors. We are never united.
Think back to history.

The British did not send a lot of troops to the Niger area. What they did was send enough troops to guard their commercial interests and then those troops under the command of their officers recruited a local constabulary which formed the bulk of the forces that enforced the will of the colonialists. They were used to pacify communities that resisted British rule and yet these were natives of the territory that would come to be known as Nigeria. A classic divide and rule strategy.
Fast forward a hundred and twenty years and not much has changed. It is the same old same old. The crab mentality where we pull each other down is still being perpetuated. Our youths are on social media calling each other IPOB, aboki and wailers. All that youthful energy that should have been put into productive ventures and enterprises is wasted on hating each other. We take such delight in using our considerable intelligence to pull each down and have none left to pull Nigeria up.
Someone brings good ideas but we do not consider the idea. Rather we fight the person because he is All Progressives Congress (APC)/Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)/North/South/Christian/Muslim.

Many brilliant Nigerians had their idea rejected because of where they came from only to go abroad to be successes. This is the case with Chinedu Ocheruo and many other Nigerians who are now celebrated abroad.
To progress as a nation, we must change. The word ‘United’ in the names of the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is what made and keeps making those nations great. They are not smarter than us. They are just more united.
Look at Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Imagine where Nigeria would have been if we forgot where that great sage came from and coalesced around his ideas for developing Nigeria. It is because of disunity that Awolowo was the “best president we never had”.

Everyone knew he was the best but he was rejected because we were and are too focused on artificial divisions like tribe and creed. Today the economy is tanking, but instead of that to be our focus, we prefer to fight while Nigeria burns.
If you say the truth about our economy, you are attacked as an enemy of the present administration as if the naira or the dollar respects your party or your tribe. This is what they did in Zimbabwe. Where is their economy today? Do we want Nigeria to go that route?Nigeria’s biggest problem is disunity and I call on President Muhammadu Buhari, the 36 state governors, and all ex-presidents to put aside their differences and help build unity through their comments and their actions.
Leaders must stop calling each other derogatory names like wailers, dullards, zombies etc. Leaders must focus on leading and not on blaming previous leaders for the situation in which they find themselves. Leaders ought to refrain from making blanket statements that generalise a whole tribe or ethnic nationality. But most importantly, leaders must believe in their people especially on the international stage and must use every podium made available to them to sell Nigerians and Nigeria to the world. If Nigerians see their leaders uniting irrespective of tribe, religion and party, they will follow suit.

Recently, the Ese Oruru saga came to public notice and while it would have been an easy narrative to generalise and blame the kith and kin of Yinusa ‘Yellow’, it would also have made for a false narrative. That is why I tweeted in the heat of the saga (February 29th) as follows “Our anger should be directed at the abductor and any negligence on the part of the police and not on a tribe or religion”. I kept on hammering this message on and off social media because I know that there are only two types of Nigerians. There are good Nigerians and there are bad Nigerians. Every other division is artificial.

The only identity God gives us when we are born in Nigeria is Nigerian. All other identities come after that. In conclusion, let us learn to be blind to party, ethnicity and religion when issues of Nigeria’s development are concerned, otherwise we will never progress, instead we will retrogress. If we do not learn this, it will be a case of I and my state against Nigeria, I and my tribe against my state, I and my village against my tribe and I and my family against my village and finally, I against my brother.

My name is Ben Murray-Bruce and I just want to make Commonsense!

  1. Nigeria has never been united and can never be, sorry to say this. I grew up to notice this extreme anger against some part of the country that baffled me. The manner they are been discussed in my environ made me to understand what led to the civil war as early as 7years after independence. But I was surprise to see that this part of the country has been the best place I have ever visited in terms of accomodating every other tribe. Let me stop here before they tag me wanted. Sorry for that once more.

While your analysis was quite correct, I want to add that disunity in Nigeria is also a symptom. What is the cause(s) of disunity in Nigeria? Am from the same Constituency with you – Kolo Town in Ogbia LGA is where I hail from; the same village where the immediate past Senator – Clever Ikisikpo, hail from. I can tell you that even my village is so disunited, and of course, even your Akassa community has problems with other communities in Brass LGA and beyond. My step-mother who hails from Egweama was a widow: she lost her husband (Mr. Ekine – a teacher), mother-inlaw and father-inlaw the same day in the Liama-Egweama crisis of 1997 that claimed several lives. She narrowly escaped with her three little sons to my village and lived there for some years before my dad – a widower himself, married her to this day. What am trying to say is that disunity is also a symptom – “something(s)” must have led to disunity amongst Nigerians. Sir, I do not quite agree with you that disunity was the major reason the European capitalists (represented) by the colonialists where able to conquer our foreparents. Am a graduate of Sociology from the UniPort (will be through with NYSC by April 2016) but I read history a lot; disunity was and remains a universal phenomena. Ancient/medieval Europe had many problems: France and England fought wars for over 100 years; the Swedes and Norwegeians had wars, there were Witch Hunts, Inquisitions, Crusades etc in Europe, yet it was not a justification for others to go enslave/colonialise them. King William Koko of Nembe never fought other kings/tribes; Nana of Itsekiri never went to conquer Yorubaland; Hausa/Fulani never fought Igbo etc, PRIOR to colonialism. Rather, the Europeans came and instigated ethnic conflicts through their slave trading. In fact, this was what happened in precolonial South Africa that led to the famous “Mcafe riots” where Shaka the Zulu King fought so hard against other ethnic groups engaged in slave trading for the Whites. The Whites always try to use internal disunity as a justification for their 400 years of enslaving, raping and lynching (Black) Africans; and sad enough a lot of us have bought their Neoimperialistic ideas. The USA is not a “united” country internally apart from what they make us believe through their White-controlled media: Whites and Blacks still have racism issues. For me, Nigeria and Africa’s disunity in general has an “external root” in European colonialism and sustained today by NEOimperialism. Let’s fight Neoimperialism and disunity will reduce drastically! # I still admire your enlightenment campaign, keep it up.

    • Yes.Disunity Is A Natural Phenomenon But The One In Nigeria Is Alarming. Not The Kind You See In Other Countries. The Senator Is Saying We Should A Create A Way To Reduce It As Low As We Can. The One In Other Countries Can’t Be Compared To The One In Nigeria.Ours Is Different. Leave The Educational Qualifications Of Yours.Let It Be Real Talk.
      Thanks Bro

    • You are quite right in your analysis of precolonial divide and rule strategy of the White imperialist, Ben is saying that if some of our own black brothers did not succumb to the temptation of the white slave traders by selling their brothers, fighting in their regimen, leading them through the secret paths into our fortress and trading away our valuable art work for gin, mirrors and cheap commodities, we could have grown to be more united and focused, making integration of all ethnic groups a collective decision under our personally accepted law and government and not the current contraption of amalgamated ethnic nationalities in perpetual conflict against itself. Today, while our art work continues to appreciate in value, their exchange items have lost value. We must rise up in solidarity for one another. Africa must unite.

The western nations are certainly united because their leaders are effective. I lived in the usa for 15 years only one day of power failure. Only three days I remember the trains developing fault. Life is so organized there one can easily become bored. In Nigeria in contrast first four years I was back power failure at least four times a week, roads have not improved. Federal Road Safety everywhere yet I have been in two accidents caused by reckless drivers. Why wouldn’t Nigerians bicker when you are living in a badly run country. Some just tire of the suffering and jet out. I don’t blame them.

    Dear Sir,

OUR UGLY ORDEAL – 2015 NAPTIN GRADUATE; SURE-P/T-VET SPONSORED

We are the 184 successful young Nigerian Mechanical and Electrical Engineers out of 220 that underwent the training with the power sector of this country, which was organized by the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and sponsored by TVET/SURE-P. A letter dated 10th April, 2014 was sent to us in respect of that. In the said letter, it was clearly stated as follows “…Please note that the sponsor of this program TVET/SURE-P, has fully paid for your participation, and as such you will not be required to make any payment. In addition, TVET/SURE-P would provide free accommodation, and pay monthly stipends throughout the 12 months duration of the program.” The program spanned from May, 2014 to April 2015.

It is important to quote an extract in the program of events for the induction ceremony, which reads thus “A memorandum of understanding has been signed between NAPTIN and SURE-P to fund the training of young Nigerian Mechanical and Electrical Engineers as a way to building capacity for the power sector which will readily absorb them after the training”
Sir, having mentioned a few of what prompted most of us to embark on the training, resigning and/or withdrawing from our former/various places of works, it is regretted that till date we are yet to be absorbed into the power sector as stated in the said program of event.

Sir, the power sector reform by the presidency and/or the Federal government is targeted, among other things, at training the Nigerian youths, who are to be meaningfully engaged in the power sector of this country to contribute positively to the industry, unfortunately some people are interested in sabotaging the effort.”
Sir, there is no gain to state that the training cost for each of us was estimated at about N3, 000, 000. 00 (Three Million Naira), which amounts to N552, 000, 000. 00 (Five Hundred and fifty-two Million Naira) for the 184 persons. We don’t want to believe that the Federal government of our country- Nigeria is interested in being wasteful.
Sir, it is rather worrisome and regretted that with about 184 trained/skilled engineers (in the power sector), the country through “man know man” still went ahead to hand-picked about 150 unskilled persons and drafted them to work in the various arms of the power industry.

    Our demands therefore are as follows;
    1. The immediate employment of the said 184 merit graduates successful trainees to TCN or by its other Government sister Power agencies.
    2. That FG should mandate NAPTIN to stop the present advert for admission which it has posted both online and in the National dailies, till our pressing issues are attended to.
    3. That the FG through Ministry of Power should mandate all Private Companies (Gencos and Discos ) and Public (TCN, NERC, etc) to grant the graduates of NAPTIN the right of first refusal during employment as it still retains 30-40% ownership of stake in such companies.
Sir, through this letter, we solicit that you use the necessary means and your good office to wade into this matter, stop this misnomer and ensure that the trained and skilled personnel are being engaged in the power sector to give back to our country for spending huge amount of money and/or resources in training us, which will enhance the quality of service in delivering of quality electrical power to our country.

Long live The Federal Republic of NIGERIA.
